tell us about your background

I am a florist by trade with a passion for Japanese handcrafts and textiles. I love creating things and have been a maker as far back as I can remember. My passion for Japanese handcrafts and textiles was first inspire by Midori, my primary school Japanese teacher, who introduced me to Japan through language and culture. Now, Oakus Designs allows me to creatively explore Japanese style and textiles through my making.

tell us about what you create

I make jewellery, accessories and home decor all of which has a strong Japanese influence through use of materials and styling. Items I make include home decorations, bags and purses, earrings, bangles, necklaces, pendants and brooches.

what made you start making your pieces?

I was collecting Japanese textural treasures and needed a legitimate excuse to keep buying vintage handmade paper, fabrics and glass beads. I just love to make things and so set to work crafting bags and purses and later jewellery as well. I started out making things for family and friends and then it expanded from there.

What is your inspiration/influences?

My inspirations are many and varied including my background in floristry and Japanese aesthetics. I love the beauty of Japanese art and craft; its attention to simplicity and everyday things. I love the old and the new and marrying the two; clean lines and structure; the history, rich colour and texture of Japanese textiles. I am forever trying new things so my materials are ever changing.

What materials do you use?

I create with Japanese vintage materials including beads, wood block prints and kimono and obi textiles. Other materials i use are Japanese papers, eco resin and varioua metals including 100% recycled sterling silver. As my pieces are ever evolving, so to are the materials I use.
